175 steering issues

I recently rebuilt the steering cylinder on a 175 diesel and now it seems like I am getting so much cavitation and foaming of the oil in the pump. You can have the oil level at the correct level and when you take the plug out after running it, it always blowing snot so to speak out at you and sets there and bubbles and so on. Don't know if it done this before working on it or not. Belongs to a customer of mine and he wanted the cylinder redone because it had some leaks. Any ideas?

On these tractors you need to fill the fluid at a fast tick-over with the steering locked fully to the left.Leave the bung out and steer to each side several times then return to left lock and check use either A.T.F. or straight universal engine oil but do not mix.and don't use hydraulic fluid, for some reason it is not recommended.I have been using many Massey fergusons with this steering system for nearly 40 years and have found universal 15W40 engine oil to be the best everywhere on these tractors.and I have one tractor that has done over20.000hours. you will always get some foaming but it shouldn't be excessive.Later tractors had a breather on the reservoir.
hope that helps....Sam

Ditto what Sam said.

However, we have always used trans-hyd fluid in the power steering on our 175s.

Hi all,
MF recommend ATF or a non-foaming hydraulic fluid.
I have always used ATF for the last 38 years and never had any problems with it.

Similar subject regarding steering cyclinder.
Massey 265. The end of the eyelet end of steering cyclinder shaft broke in half, leaving the end one half inside the block where the pin inserts thoough the shaft eyelet.

When I pulled the pin, it too has broken with the bottom end still inside the block.

Any suggestions on how to remove both the end of the steering shaft and the bottom end of the pin?

My MF Shop Manual is very detailed on other parts, but is lacking on break down details on this part of steering.

Suggestions and direction will be appreciated.
