18.4-30 tires

Looking at my tires and rims that I am planning to swap, I notice one set of 18.4-30s say 'on 14" rim'. These are Armstrongs and do seem to be 14" rims. The other set of 18.4 tires (firestones) say 'mounted on 16" rims' and the rims appear to be 16". Are these tires truly different? Will I have a problem mounting the Armstrongs on the better 16" rims?

Thanks.

Typically most of those tires were mounted on rims that were about 2 inches narrower than the tire size. On a few rare occasions they mounted some of the narrower tires on rims or wheels that are only an inch narrower. To wide they may not set on the bead good and could slip under heavy loading/pulling. To narrow and they pinch in such that you can't gett all the tread to set on the ground to get a good bit when pulling hard or it has to be run to soft for the side walls and can cause them to slip under heavy load /pulling this slipping would be on the bead at the rim /wheel in both examples.

Thanks. I only asked because the tires were marked as such and my W450 IPL does call out a 14" rim for a 15-30 tire which I understand is old nomenclature for the 18.4 tire.

My understanding is 15-30 is for a 18.4-30 and 14-30 is for a 16.9-30
I’ve ran 16.9’s on 14” rims but presently am running 2 sets of 16.9’s on 15” rims
I’m also running 1 set of 18.4’s on 15” rims and 2 sets on 16” rims
We also have 2 sets of 15.5-38’s on 14” rims
I’ve seen 18.4’s on 14” but they looked a little ballooned up to me, I’d think you’d have to run the air pressure a bit lower to flatten the thread

Don't think the 15-30 would be the same as the 18.4 would expect it to match up with the 15.5 sizes better. And the 18.4 would have been matched with an 18-30.

15-30 is rim size, 15” wide x 30” diameter
General recommendation is rim to be 1-3” narrower than tire thread width
The only 15.5 tire I’m aware of is 15.5-38, never seen one in a smaller rim diameter

May comment was intended for a general over view of most tires sizes and widths. Not a specific tire size. More to do with the width of the rim tire correlation. Yes the only 15-30 IO know of was /is the 15.5-38 which would be on a 13 or14 inch rim.
