18.4-34 vs 38 tire chains

I know tire chains for a 18.4-38 is gonna be longer than a set of chains for a 18.4-34, but how much would a guy have to cut off?

I found an ad in the State Farmer where a local guy has several sets of chains for the 38's and we need some for our 34's on the 285. I guess he bought out a dealer somewhere that closed, so he's getting rid of them at a good price. I may talk dad into buying a pair for the 1855 (18.4-38's) as well, in the off chance we might want to use it in the winter.

Put them on and get ready wit the cutting torch and cut excess off.

There ain't a whole lot of difference in the circumference of the tires. If you can get a deal on them, you can make them work. You can either just cut off the excess, or just tie it back. Just about all tractor tire chains will have excess side chain.

There is actually about 12 inches differance in the length required.

Make sure you keep what you cut off, cause if you do not you will want to put them on a tractor with 38's on it. Use a bolt cutter and spread the link just enough to take it apart then you can just weld it when you put it together.

I have a set that I use on both sizes. I use quick thread links and just add or subtract that last section of the chains depending on if they are being used on the 34's or the 38's. Takes about 2 minutes to set them up for the correct tire size.

You're dropping the diameter by 4", so your circumference (the length of chain needed) will come down by 4(pi) inches, or just over 12".
