Gas or diesel? Gas was 265, diesel was 283.

My son owns an engine machine shop and he made the same mistakes on my 1600 gas. He couldn't find bearings for the 231. He was looking in the book under the diesel engine.

Why when I look up number stamped on crank it says for 283

That casting number is correct for an 1800A, which would've been a 265. I think the only difference between the later 283 was sleeves and pistons, and that began on the B series, and they shared the same crank. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

The stroke was 4.0” on both the 265 and 283. Parts book lists different cranks for each. Maybe something like thrust bearing was different. Or maybe the 283 crank could be modified to fit in the earlier block.
