1855 engine

how can you tell if the 1855 block has been updated to the oil cooler block, was it a add on oil cooler from the dealer or a new block like a 1955 installed at the dealer? can someone please post pictures on here? what other improvements were made to the 1855 and what's the value of a good one today with original paint?

Different block ,the cooler is casted right into the block. They were usually updated because the original block ventilated itself. Another thing to look for is the updated 12 point rod bolts. If you pull the dipstick and shine a light in the hole rotate the engine till that rod comes around you can see the heads of the bolts. I just finished an overhaul on one and they are not cheap to fix I have about $7000 cdn in this one including machine shop work.

thank you sir for the information, I knew they had some issues with this 1855 engine due to lack of oil cooler but I didn't know how it was corrected.

There were quite a few 1855 that were equiped with an oil cooler mounted on the oil filter housing, an add on to a non oil cooled block. The were installed by the dealers once the issue was brought to light. Serial numbers from 220000 to 234??? If I remember right.

I've been around 4 digit's for a long time and have never seen an add on oil cooler. How did it mount and I take it there must have been external coolant lines? Pics??

You can go to Agco Parts Books/1855 and look up this part number. It was a kit that included the filter base, cooler, hoses etc. I have seen them on some 1855's that the owners claim it came that way from factory, but I no way to either confirm or deny. I actually think that they did for a while, but they were definitely available for dealer install.
From parts book;
30-3173968
Kit - Oil Cooler - Used With 30-3056457 Short Block - 168162AS Engine, 166570AS Crankcase Or 30-3097323 Crankcase - Includes Ref. Nos. 1 And 3 Through 10

The other thing I can tell you is that in the service manual (original) it makes no mention of this cooler, which is odd to my way of thinking. Then too a correction to my earlier post I said serial number 234???, it should have been 244,???. You know too, that everyone says to check for the 12 point rod bolts, as that is a solution to the issues, but really it's not. My 19 had the 12 point bolts, but they never maid the wrist pin bushing correction to the one piece, and that is where this one failed. Luckily I caught it just in time, and the two piece were pretty well hammered out, hence the slight knock. I have seen others with rods out the side, with 12 point and still 2 piece wrist pin bushings. The one piece update bulletin came out much later than the 12 point bulletin.

This picture was at the national show in August '23 New York.
See the extra base under the filter.
Watch Chris Losey The Oliver Guy on YouTube.
He's gone through this on his project 1855.

Not sure what your getting at with the picture. Looks just like mine on a 1955. Late 1855's used that same block as the 1955's after serial number 244xxx. Prior to that block change, they were or could be fitted with the cooler kit I listed above.

Here is an excerpt from a post back 2015 where he says he has a 310 with the add on cooler to the filter base. On 2-6-2016 there is a post of one for sale in Wisconsin, but don't know how to show the exact post.

my 310 is one that has no factory oil cooler just the add on to the filter housing , ive read on here from guys the turbo heat & oil cap. was the big problem on these 310's so im thinking of adding some kind of cooler like oliver used to cool hyd. & hydraul shift on the front of the rad. what do you guys think about running the turbo return line through a cooler befor sending back to block , not only would it cool the oil befor it went back to engine it would add about a QT or so to capatity , im also adding a oil temp. gauge to pan , maybe someone has tryed something like this and could share some tips

I know what a cooler block looks like because my 1855 has one and both them pics are cooler blocks. The one that scooter posted is a by pass filter not a cooler. You can see the coolant lines going to the cooler.

Use the cooler adapter from the wrong shade of green, JD 6600 combine. Worked good on our Oliver 1650 for many years.
Part Number AR64415 substituted to RE10869.

I don't need one just thought it would be interesting to see that add on on kit from oliver ..
