I have been working on a diesel 188 engine in a 580CK.
I put most of the tractor engine together sleeves, rings pistons bearings, oil pump and head. I ran into a few problems when installing the rocker arm assembly. I had a couple bent push rods so I got some new ones. When cleaning out the oil ports on the rocker arms I broke off one of the hollow adjustment screws in which the cap of the screw is the female orifice for the push rod. It broke where the oil port is at the area of the screw which was "hour glassed" machined out for the oil passage. Anyway - I extracted the end of the screw from the rocker arm and it will work with out that piece of screw since the screw was drilled out anyway. My current problem is that with the rods in place and the rocker arm assembly bolted to the head and the engine at top dead center for pistons 1 and 4, I am having a hard time in adjusting the valves. I had to screw the adjustment screws in so far that the oil ports in the threaded part of the rocker arms are covered. I could see it visibably in the one rocker arm where I broke the screw off. At the end of the rocker arms where they contact the valve stems - it is worn (indented visably). I have a couple of questions and seek any advise you can offer.
1. Should the rocker arms contact points with the valves be ground where they are indented from wear?
2. can I shim up the rocker arm assembly to give me the clearance I need to adjust the valves and have the oil ports open?
The push rods are the same size as the old ones, the head gasket is the same thickness as the old one. The gentleman that did the head work said he only shaved it.
