188d troubles

Engine could have been changed I guess as I don't know anything about the tractor before my grandpa had it. I wouldn't even mess with it if it wasn't his old tractor.
Here is a picture I found in my phone that I probably had sent to Dale. I assume it's showing the old gasket or the replacement that was sent.
That appears to be the large flange gasket on a small flange sleeve. The only conclusion I can draw is that the block was changed out at some point. You will never find a small flange block under a head with pencil injectors that is stock. I don't know what you paid for your small flange gasket, but we have them made and they sell for $170.00 which last I checked was less than 1/2 the CASE price.
 
It was way more than that.

When referring to the "Late" 430 - 530 Parts Book, Ser. # 8297801 and after, the book doesn't even refer to the small flange sleeve. It does list your block, and a later block, but both use the large flange sleeve. I'm stumped. Maybe someone will chime in and clear things up, but that's the way I see it.

I went back and read more thoroughly your posts and the 350# compression stands out. Your compression should be 400 to 420. CASE says to bring engine up to operating temp, remove all injectors, be sure battery is fully charged and crank and observe. Should crank at aprox. 200RPM. Why such low compression? The low compression could account for the smoke you mention. Even though you have new valves, were they installed properly? Were the seats all ground to hell? On your head, valves should protrude .005" out beyond the head surface. I'm not 100% certain you have the correct sleeves in that engine.
 
Was not at operating temp when checked.
Not sure on the head. Didn't look into it much when the head came back.
Possibly wrong sleeves is interesting.
When I get home I'm a couple months I'll tear into it and hopefully figure it out.

I looked back through my emails and the gasket and fire rings I bought were almost $500.
The crazy thing is the head gasket in the picture I posted is the exact same as the gasket I removed when I took it apart the first time. I don't know how but I do know it ran fine for over 20 years. It did have a bad spot and filled one of the head bolt holes full of carbon. Talk about hard to get the head off.
