1936 A Tires

What size tires are supposed to be on round spoked rims on a 36 A? There are 13.9s now and they don't look quite right.

Thanks.

WOW...mine has 11.2's and I thought they were too wide.

There are different widths of those wheels. Measure the rim between the bead flanges and post back here. The tires were probably between 7 and 9.5 inches wide originally. Unless someone re-rimmed the wheels with wider rims, those tires seem awfully wide.

I would say it is the original rims since the spokes are factory attached. I was thinking that they should be 12.4 max.

I always wondered what size that was on the model a. My 37 a got 14.9 by 38 with firestone tires

I would agree with 12.4" as putting anything smaller on would deem the tractor almost useless for field-work.
Would leave tire marks and ruts or be spinning way too much.
I see 11.2" a lot on restored tractors and they always look ridiculously small.
As you can see, I lean toward the more "practical" side..!

I go with the 11.2 tires. I had an a that the wheels had been widened to 11 inches and 12.4 or 13.6 would work on them. With the stock widths, 11.2s look the best and will also look good on a B, but 9.5s would probably be best for the b model for use. Jerry

Next time on my "Late Styled B" I will go with 13.6x38...
I leave too many ruts with the 12.4x38 on it now and since they are not loaded anymore, I need more traction on the loader for moving dirt (Blade) and snow..
Would be nice if I can get some 11" rims too..!
I know the earlier "B" models had tires as small as 8" originally, so I know going this large is just plain too large for those "Classics"..
One has to be very careful about picking a tire size from the new tire size designations. At first glance a size seems "right", but will be actually too small to look "right"...
FWIW..

I am emminently familiar with the 1936 Model "A" tractor, and know what it will and will not pull. I recall 10-38 being the standard tire but 11-38 seemed best suited for a tractor so powered. As for one fellow saying he was "cutting ruts" with standard-sized tires, that tells me he was driving in regions far too wet for doing any meaningful work. I've picked corn in such conditions, and you could have had 20-inch wide tires - would still have grief!

But you know, in the final analysis, this is the freeest country in the world - Praise our Lord for that -- and for a fellow to choose larger tires, I salute him. It remains my opinion that any tire greater than 12.4 wide isn't the "A" look I remember. (PatB)

To answer your question in short, it is personal preference. However, if you want to pull with it ever (even just for fun) 11.2 size tires would be best and still look O.K. 12.4 tires would be the max size I would put on. You will gain very little ground speed but also loose a bit of pulling power if you care. Stock rims (on F&H spokes) were only 8" wide at the most per Wes Malcom's book on the unstyeld A. FYI
