1936 b John Deere FFA project starting problems

I am working on a 1936 John Deere b. I have rebuilt the motor, carb and had the mag rebuilt. I was trying to get it started and have not had any luck so far with trying by hand. It doesn't seem that i am getting much fuel up to the motor. We have gas at the carb. Any advice? We are trying to get this going for a FFA project for our fair next week. Next thing is to try a pull start. Thanks for the help.

If your not getting fuel to the engine the carb may have ports or fuel nozzle still blocked. All those brass screws need to be removed and the ports need to be hand drilled out. # 40 and #53 drills. The fuel nozzle from the stem should be removed and cleaned. Ron Mn.

For a good hand cranker to start EVERYTHING MUST BE RIGHT ON...

My 38 hand crank B starts best with the throttle just barely cracked open (real slowwwwwwwww idle)

DO NOT OVERCHOKE AND FLOOD IT

The mag static start timing needs to be right at TDC, if too slow shes hard to start, if too fast she kicks back. Set it so the mag SNAPS to fire right when the Left Hand Impulse on the Flywheel is at the flat mark on tractors side at 3 o clock (left pistons then at TDC)

I assume you have the plug wires on correct NOT reversed, if reversed she will pop n bang n backfire n maybe kick the flywheel back something awful

Mine starts best if I pull the Left piston over on compression....

Get it timed right,,,,,,, set throttle at slow idle,,,,,,choke her maybe only a time or two then open choke DO NOT FLOOD AND WET FOUL THE PLUGS BE SURE PLUG WIRES AND TIMING ARE RIGHT

If you have to pull start it okay but then adjust the carb for best idle and load conditions

You need a good strong BLUE spark NOT any faint thin wimpy yellow spark for her to hand crank start easily.

If not already, try a new set of the deep reach side wire electrode hot plugs like Autolite 3077

My 38 B usually starts the first or second pull over UNLESS people are watching lol butttttttttttt to do that EVERYTHING (mag, carb, timing, plugs) must be RIGHT...

If she dont start and the plugs are dry LOOK AT CARB OR CHOKE PROBLEMS,,,,,but if they are real wet shes flooded and you overchoked perhaps

Feel free to e mail me any questions, been there done that n got the T shirt yearsssssss ago

Mine pops right off too since I took off the Wico C & put on a Wico X mag. Even the kids said it starts so easy. Just barely turn it over & its running.

In general, the later X had more spark energy then the C and had a higher magnetic field strength rotor plus bearings versus the C"s bushings..... The Correct Police can kiss my grits lol but the X is acceptable as it was a direct replacement

in MY experience if it has good strong spark its nearly impossible to flood them hand-cranking. throw away the plugs if they're champions.

One ws at the Iowa State Fair, I was told it would not start the day before. An older gentleman told me it was because they were cranking it the wrong way. Hope this is not your problem but thought I'd pass it on.

wsm, what does it do when you try to start it? Does it fire at all?

Excellent advice so far. If that doesn't work, see below.

A rebuilt mag won't do you any good if you don't have things timed right.

If you pull both spark plugs out and lay them on the block. The top wire on the mag should be on the flywheel side. Roll the engine over very slow. When you hear the mag "click", STOP immediately. Look at the flywheel and the "LH IMPULSE" mark and see where it is relative to the mark on the transmission case (about 3-4 o'clock). It should be RIGHT on it. If you're not, get it there. Make sure you have the right wire on the right plug too.

The tractor is out of time. When i put the crank back in i did not line up the timing marks. (rookie) I am now trying to figure out how to get the gear to line up. We raised the govener and the cover over the end of the cam and we are about an 1/8" from being able to trun the cam to line up the marks but i cant get and more room. Any help on this one. Thanks to all that have helped

If you unbolt the main bearing assembly from the case, you should be able to shift the crank back enough to align the timing marks on the cam gear and the crank gear. Watch your oil lines to the main bearings if you do this. You may also need to undo them. You may also need to remove the flywheel and first reduction gear cover.
