1938 F20 Throttle

My 38 F20 has the standard 10 notch
throttle on the left side of the fuel
tank. How much travel should it have? Mine
only moves about 7 notches, and I cannot
get it to go to either the first or last
notch. Thanks for the help.

There isn't really any way to answer that, there is only end of travel both ways. In other words, the throttle
plate can only go open so far and close so far. You can change those settings, with the stop screw on the carburetor
you can adjust how far the throttle plate closes and with the adjustment at the governor you can sometimes make the
throttle open more. Any change at the notches would be affected by these adjustments.
Years ago I redrilled the throttle shaft to the carburetor on a W-30 to get more high end rpm on the belt. One IH
guy leaning on the fender listening to it work the threshing machine told me that was overspeeding. He said at a
certain high rpm the rod dippers would not dip oil like they should. I have no idea about that but I have seen a
few with large holes in the side of the block so I think there is something to that. A tach would tell you just how
much maximum rpm these engines were designed for. Hope this helps, may be I rambled a bit.
