I have a 1940 Farmall A. I installed a new clutch disc, the old one was down to the rivets and now the clutch won't release. I adjusted the pedal to 11/2". I adjusted the fingers accordingly and have about 3/16" clearance between the throw-out bearing and fingers, I even adjusted so I only had about and 1/8" but it won't release. Is it possible that the springs on the pressure plate are to weak? I split the tractor and adjusted the fingers according to the manual I have which is 2 23/64" and subtracted 27/32" from that to make it easier to measure. Any suggestions? I'm thinking a new pressure plate??

Weak springs would make the clutch release easier and/or slip. It's not weak springs.

Did you install the clutch disc backwards? That's the most likely reason why the clutch won't release.

I installed the clutch correctly, flat side to the flywheel and the protruding hub towards the throwout bearing or to back of the tractor.

Good question but yes I did first thing I checked. On the clutch drive shaft would the end of that shaft be flush with the bell housing? I checked mine and it extends about a 1/16” further than the housing the shaft is original I’m guessing since I bought this tractor not running. Thanks Bill

Shine a light up in the inspection hole from the bottom and actuate the clutch pedal to see what's going on. That's the next thing I'd recommend you do. No need to be in the seat or have a helper necessarily. Wrap a rope around the pedal and pull down while you're laying under the tractor.

What happens if adjust the free play down to a 1/2” by the external rod adjustment? If it releases this way then button it up an go on. All you need is enough clearance between the fingers and the throw out bearing so the bearing doesn’t spin all the time and it’s not putting pressure on the fingers holding the clutch partly released. You will just have to keep it in the back of your mind to keep your foot off the clutch when it is not being used.

Got it working, I split the tractor made a jig to compress the fingers only moved them 1/8" and the clutch was free put it back together and engaged the PTO, could spin it by hand with the clutch depressed but could not when i engaged the clutch. Started it up put it in gear it did grind abit but worked like it should ran for awhile and everything work fine. Thanks for all the advice
