(quoted from post at 09:43:49 08/02/22) HiYa Chris-
First, let me just say up front that it is your tractor and you can do anything you want with it, even paint it pink (but NOT green & yeller) so your call on what you do with it. Next, there was only one decal on the 9Ns and that was only the Donaldson Air Cleaner. UNITED and the later C3, HOUDAILLE-HERSHEY (HH) units did not use a decal. Decals were released with standard 2N Tractor production in April, 1943 when the US War Board lifted the restrictions. The Warhorse 2N did not have decals either and were now using just the UNITED style air cleaner. In the back of the March, 1940 MPC, and later MPCs as well, there is a list parts that were used based on serial numbers. Donaldson and United shared air cleaners on the early 9N. There is a difference and the cups are the fastest way to ID them. United cups were more rounded. Donaldson had a more squarely shaped cup. Donaldson made air cleaners for other tractors, Alli-Chalmers for one, and there were two decals on them. There are actually two Donaldson decals used on the air cleaner. The large square one was on the top of the unit and the smaller, rectangular one was on the bottom of the cup. Look at all the original films and still photos of early 9Ns and see for yourself. Here is a picture of Henry Ford demonstrating the first 9N tractor at Fair Lane on June 29, 1939. Look closely at the air cleaner and you can see it is the Donaldson and has the two decals on it. That was it. Dont go by any FORD TRACTOR book with pictures of any 9Ns in it that are not original FORD era photos. Dwight Emstroms s/n 16 is typical. It and others shown in this books are not correct. There was no PTO WARNING; no FRAM oil filter cartridge; and no BATTERY FILL decal. Those came with 2N model. The new battery cover had the water fill decal. Those familiar blue decals are now offered in a generic kit (SEE LINK) and include the two Proofmeter decals used on late 8Ns. You can get them individually as well. George Bradish Tractor Parts, Latrobe, PA, has the Donaldson decal too in OEM water transferable and modern vinyl adhesive. FWIW & FYI: FORD never offered a single or a separate decal kit available as an accessory. If so, show me where in the MPC's.
We know the 9N-9600-C1 Air Cleaner was supplied by DONALDSON, used on early 9Ns, alternately with the 9N-9600-C2 UNITED model. When standard 2N production began in April, 1943, the supplier was changed to HOUDAILLE-HERSHEY with their 'H' logo and the C-3 suffix added in two places and with a tangential V-clamp.
