1943 John Deere B

I want to thank all who gave me tips on removal of the brakes on the B, especially the pictures. All worked out well by taking your advice. The brakes on the B with serial number 144427 should have 6 rivets per shoe. Mine has 8. I am getting new shoes and linings. Some of the shoes have been brazed in the past. I want to believe the 6 rivet shoe will fit since that is what is called for in the manuals.
Thanks again for the previous help.

I once tried the 8 holes ones in place of the 6 hole and ended up cutting them off since the drum did not then fit. Do what the parts book says. Unless maybe someone swapped out the complete housings in the past from a later tractor ? Or maybe they had some used shoes/linings and they fit because of the wear ?

I am helping on a 44 B. Did replace of brake linings. Had 8 rivets per shoe. Better recheck as you have some problem and maybe more if you try to mix parts. HTH George

The B with serial number 144427 definitely calls for the 6 rivets. That is what I ordered to replace. It should work unless the previous owner replaced the whole brake system that uses 8 rivets.

Interesting.. Learned something. This 44 had extra shoes with it and all were 8 holes. Must have been changed? Checked an aftermarket supplier and no listing for the 6 hole linings, so how to reline them? Drill new holes? Have to check some of the other parts brakes I have on early styled Bs.

Ordered 6 rivet shoes as my serial number dictates. Parts number crossed to at least one or 2 other numbers and the shoes came in as 8 rivet. Checked at dealer the parts numbers and all correct so I will assume JD will now send you 8 rivet shoes for the 43 B #144427. Maybe all others as well.
