I recently took front timing cover off along with the camshaft gear, idler gear, plate behind the gears and the distributor. This was done to replace the 2 gaskets on the front of the engine. Was pretty positive when I put it back on, that the gears were all timed correctly. Now it just backfires and makes alot of loud popping. Doesnt start the turns over and backfires. Im thinking Ill have to pull the cover off and make sure I got the gears are all timed. Whats everyones thoughts, is this the what i need to do.

The tractor can be timed to run if only the ignition timing marks are off. If the cam timing is off it will never run. Look at the timing instructions in the manual to assess whether you did to correctly at the cam to crank. If so, the distributor can be rotated to operate even is it is not in its traditional position. Jim

Are you using a dist or a mag are the wires going in order 1342 With a mag it can start and run like you say. Make sure #1 is on compression and rotor is pointed correct.

It sounds to me like the distributor is 180 off, the cam is probably OK if you lined the marks up.
