1944 John Deere A pulling tractor

Hell everyone, last summer a purchased a 44 model a to turn it into a pulling tractor. I also have a 54 60 that I pull with, but the 60 gets used as my mowing tractor. The first pull that attended after working on it, it powered out way to early. I can tell in first gear I am going faster then what I would when pulling my 60. Has anybody swap a first reduction gear from a 60 or a 620 into a Model A. I would love to build power around what I have but my budget is tight. I

Just made it home from working on a tractor. Texting is fine I may be pushing 70 but have pretty much joined the new phone generation.

dont know what you have done do you have a mag or dist how old is the fuel how good is fuel when you pull where is your draw bar
are you in corect timing have you adj rockers if so did you use a feller gage if so there not right unless the rocker arms arent
wore a 44 a has less power than a late a say 50 or 51 not much but a little how big are your rear tires etc i pull a b in 5000
farm stock now somtimes i enter it in the upper classes she holds her own even against the a mine is not built up just 90 over mw
pistons reground cam recuilt carb eltronic ing i run a hoter coil and gap plugs to 035 run 92 octane with out alky in it cast
centers on rear with 13.6 on rears if i remner corectly your a has the 4 speed so first is faster if you are runing the 14.9
tires it makes em dog down early sory for the spelling hope this helps an early 60 with out live pto and hyd can be bad momas

Sounds like yours is what I want to do to mine. It still has the"c" mag, this winter I will be changing it out for a distributor. The timing is set 1degree advance. I was told by an old John deere tech to give it at the most 4 degree s but I could only an extra degree. Valves are set to specs. Currently I am try out different set of plugs. Champions suck by the way. My tires are 12.2 or 13.6 I would have to look. The only major modifications I have made is I put the dlt 71 carb. In theory I should be close to 50's A's in terms of hp(in theory). I am going to try to run it in the 6500 class in a couple of weeks. It does have the 6 speed but it has the high and low on it. If I have the money this winter I want to put overbore pistons in it and regrind the cam.
