1945 (hand start) Model A Serial #554698

I ordered one of the clip on belt pully brake shoes to replace the one that was on the tractor when I bought it. However, I have been thinking about removing the new shoe and attaching it directly to the brake arm using the factory holes. Has anybody ever done this? Where did you get the rivets and how did you get them pressed onto the arm so the brake shoe would be tight. Doing this would recreate the factory look. Thanks...ray

You can use the lining u ordered, local hardware store should be able to find rivits for ya. Stick something behind the brake that pushes on the rivet only and pull clutch lever back to hold it while u pound the rivet. I use a roll-pin punch, leaves nice look

I replaced my lining and did not want the clip on one since it looked wrong. My dealer (Gardiner in Waldorf MD) picked up the right part and it came with the rivets. I bought the rivet tool from somebody on two cylinder magazine. Mr. Gardiner is a collector himself, and probably spent more time tracking it down than it cost.

Your JD dealer should be able to get the pad & brass rivets. I have the special punch for the rivets but it"s not absolutely necessary. I have done many starting with a center punch to flare out the rivet, then graduate to a flat round punch.

I had my brake shoes (37 JD A)relined by a brake/clutch shop here in Colorado Springs last Summer after finding out JD wanted $136.00 per shoe. The guy has been in business for nearly 50 years. He even rebuilt the shoes that were getting thin from rust. Looked like new when he was done. Cost? $45.00 for all 4 shoes ( I gave him $65.00 for all the effort). So, check and see if you have a brake/cluth (old time shop) shop in your area.

This is a little off topic, but a friend of mine had his brake shoes religned here in town and had to use some extra material between the shoe and linning as the drums were worn so much that if the brake shoes just had the stndard linning, they wouldn't reach the drums when the pedals were pressed.

The original lining with rivets from Deere is part number R89780. I have one in my hand and plan to install it later. Bought the part last year, so it should be available from Deere.
