So I pulled the head off today. #1 cylinder the valves where working as they should. #2 cylinder intake worked but exhaust was stuck super bad. #3 intake and exhaust where stuck but not real bad. #4 exhaust valve was stuck. Got as many exhaust valves closed as I could and poured ATF down the exhaust. I'll let ti sit that way till the head gasket come in and go from there. Not suppose to be here till Tuesday

I spun it over a good many times to see if the valves would free up or if I had to keep soaking them. The last time I spun it over so the intake valves where open poured ATF down into the open stuck exhaust valve then used a hammer to drive them down then poured ATF down the exhaust so that way I knew as much of the valve as could be soaking in ATF was

Well so far the valves are still stuck and the exhaust valve in #2 cylinder is really stuck bad. I tried to turn it a bit and that was a not go. The other valves while still stuck a light tap has then drop but the #2 is hard stuck and I may have to pull it out to free it up

yes , thats the way, why keep rust in the guide to further wear them. and also when the engine gets hot they will stick again.

I thought I replied to this thread this morning but have not seen my post. Anyhow one of the points I made was if the valves can be removed just by just backing off the adjuster and removing the keepers with the head off why not do it?

I'd take all valves out, keeping them somehow tagged to which position they were in the block. Then go to some place like BassPro Shops and buy a wire brush that you would be using to clean a gun and scrub those guides clean. Then hit Harbor Freight to see if they have a brass wire wheel that fits your bench grinder to polish the valves and stems.

And while you have them out get on of those suction cup tools and some lapping compound to freshen up the seats and valves. Clean everything real good including the cylinders and tops of the pistons and reassemble engine.

Okay got a little carried away but that is what I would do!

FYI took head off 50 T Baler when I was about 16 , to clean carbon , replaced head gasket. For a project. Put it all back together and proudly showed dad what it did for him .started Id up and it had a crack between 2 and 3. I was very upset thought I did it .
Dad said not to worry here what we do to fix that. He torqued all the bolts between 2 and 3 ten more pounds. Never leaked again. Problem solve . So proud of my dad ,he taught me so much . Thought I would share, in case your cub head is cracked , not to worry try it .

I'm a gun collector so I have the gun cleaning brushes etc. As for pulling them all most work just fine as is and I like the KISS way of thinking

and thats what i also do and totally agree. rust is not your friend in an engine. may as well throw some sand in to.

Maybe I'm a bit on the fussy side, just thinking if a couple are rusted so bad they won't move the other six might be just a little less rusted.

I mean we are talking a little four cylinder two valve engine with one head, not a 16 cylinder four valve per cylinder engine with eight heads!

Good Luck!
