1948 12 Volt Pertronix setup

tractor was running OK in shop. Then would start and run for a short and then even shorter time. NOW sort of or almost starts but won't stay running. Question, I have the square can conversion doohickey for a round coil installed and the recommended, on this site, round 12 volt coil. I am still running the wire through the original Ford resistor. I get the impression from some discussions that this resistor is not needed with this coil and I should bypass the resistor?
I suspect my problem is fuel, possibly the tank but have been busy and have not had time to check it out.

ow would anyone know, when we do not know what "this coil" happens to be? Specify a manufacturer & part number or at the least, the primary resistance value.

If it's printed on the coil "no external resistor required" or something to that effect then no, it should not be wired in before the Ford resistor.

ell, Rick, I hope he understands what you said better than I do, because I do not.

(quoted from post at 15:25:11 06/01/16) NAPA 12 v coil # recommended several times on this board.
hat would likely be IC-14 at 3.2 Ohms & if so, no resistor is used.

Well, Rick, I hope he understands what you said better than I do, because I do not.

A lot of the older coils I have seen that were in the 3.25 ohm range had "No resistor needed" printed on the can . I think Ford used that type in the mid to late sixties as well as GM . Seems like you basically had two choices of factory made coils back then . Now it is all over the board .

I am pretty sure all GM built cars from the 60s with points ignition
used either an external resistor or resistance wire built into the harness.
