Thinking about putting a proofmeter on my 8n but
second guessing it being at it was an original option.
What are you original guys thoughts on this.

I got two that caame with the proof meter and they both work, but I seldom look at them. early 8ns did not have them at all.

It wasn't an option. It was standard equipment shortly after the sidemount distributor came out in early 1950. Some sidemounts did not have a proofmeter, but no frontmounts did from the factory.

If you want to add an oem proofmeter to a 1948 8N, you will need to replace the dash and get a governor w/ the proofmeter cable hole.

sorry for the typo. Yes the 48 DID NOT have the proofmeter. I want to put one but would like to keep it original as possible. Would you guys do it or not do it.

nascarngm88........unless ya just gotta haff a "proofmeter" fer the tachometer function, think about a tacho from a HOT-ROD shop. A little clever radiator hoze banding and yer in like flinn. I did that once fer a 4-nipple front mount. eazy-peazy.......clever Dell

f you want to keep it as original as possible then forget about the proofmeter.

another question. my governor linkage is sloppy loose. ive seen folks shimming it to take up the slack, yes this may work but wouldn't a new governor housing fix this as well

WHY? THAT'S A LOT OF HASSLE. The Proofmeter wasn't added until early 1950, technically, when the angle-mount distributor was released which also moved the generator to the left side. The steering box was changed too. There are nice to have, but if ya want one that badly, buy a late 8N and avoid the hassles.

About 5 years ago I was working on my neighbors' (at that time) '49 8N. The block s/n verified this. The odd thing is it had a later 8N dash with the Proofmeter hole but it was PLUGGED! Looked to be a factory plug, but I never could find any documented evidence on it. I posted back then on the 'other' board -it's there in the archives but a moot point since all the pictures that I posted with it are FUBAR. Anyway, it also had the later steering box and the governor was not tapped for the Proofmeter line. Now it was said the late 49's could be ordered with late steering boxes and new dash with the plug, but like I say, show me the data. I'm not sure the dashes swap out that easy either...like I said above, just buy a late 8N...

The late steering box came out in 1949 at serial number 8N216989. I don't know where you got your info that the late steering box came out in 1950, but it is wrong!
