1948 8N Starter Switch Not Working

Mark in AL

New User
Nothing happens when I push the switch with the key on. I can jump between the terminals on the starter solenoid and it cranks fine. There"s continuity between the switch and the solenoid, and the switch appears to ground when pushed in.

Any suggestions?

IN NEUTRAL, jumper around the switch to ground to test the switch. If it turn the starter,. remove and clean the switch and test it.

If does not turn the starter. Keep one end of the jumper to ground and work backwards until you find the problem.

Jiggle the tranny? Put it in gear and push on the wheels to rock it a bit. Works for me when mine seems to lock up occasionally.

You do know it all is right the starter will spin over with or with out the key turned on. That said the soliniod is a ground type set up so if you ground the wire going to the start button and it does not spin the engine then you have either a broke wire or a bad soliniod or if you replaced it you have the wrong type soliniod Not just any will work correctly on the ford tractors

The key doesn't have anything to do w/ the thumb switch. W/ the transmission in neutral, slide the insulator boot off of the wire end & ground it to the tranny case w/ a screwdriver & see what happens.

If you need to replace the switch, check out the article in the N-Newsletter at the link below.
