1949 A carb problems

Have a 49 A that is all rebuilt and starts and runs great. Carb also gone through and idles and runs good wide open. The problem I'm having is that if tractor sits and idles for a while when either put in gear and take off or rev up it will sputter some and blow black smoke and eventually take off and run fine. If only idles for a short time it does not do this and acts like it should. What would cause this? Float level set too high? Thanks for any help

turn load needle in 1/2 turn. When you throw throttle open or when the governor opens throttle, it should momentarily have a few puffs of dark smoke. A little too much and a blurb or two means load needle too rich. Sounds like 1/2 turn would do it.

On the bottom of the Carb Bowl attach a clear plastic line. Extend the line above the carb by approximately 6 inches. Open up the fuel and monitor the fuel level in the plastic hose in relation to the matting surface at the point were the bowl meets the upper carb. housing. Do this with engine not running. Level of gasoline should be below point were bowl meets upper carb housing.

It would be 5/8" on a 49 "A" with correct 71 carb . That's why the 71 and 67 (late "B") came with fluid baffles in the bowl vent passage,so you could run higher float level without it sloshing up in the vent. (all fuel used it also)
