Just got a 1949 JD A and was wondering what the oil capacity is,wanting to change and also where do I check the operating level/
Thanks

The crankcase oil capacity is 11 quarts and transmision is 7 gallons. There is a bolt that screws out under the clutch pulley. Loosen that and if oil pours out there, you're good on the oil level.

As 1951G says, the bolt, which is actually the oil level test cock, is below and just forward of the clutch pulley. Unless you know the history of the tractor. I would change all the lubricants. John Deere Operators manual recommends draining the oil, add 1 gallon of kerosene, run engine for several seconds, then drain crankcase and replace oil filter. This will flush out some of the sludge.

Suggest you buy at least the Operators manual. Lots of good info.

Enjoy your A! I also have a 49 A and it still works for a living!
