1949 Ford 8N - Tires

I have a dum question - as a I am newbie to the Ford 8n world.

My 1949 8N has mismatched rear tires. They need replaced and of course want to match them correctly.

Back-Right is 11.2-28
Back-Left is 12.4-28

What is the correct original tire size?

Is the rim the same size for both of those tire sizes? Will I need a new rim and tire.....or just tire?

i don't think so. my 2N has 12.4s on it, and i'm fairly sure they're on standard rims.

This one has 12.4-28 on it.

This one has 11.2-28 on 2 different size rims.

In my humble opinion, unless correctness is critical, match the best tire, sell the orphan and don't
worry about the rims.

8Ns were originally shipped with 10X28 rear tires.

The modern size designation for the older 10X28 tire is 11.2X28.

12.4X28 tires were OEM equipment of NAAs and are one size oversized for 8Ns.

Yep, two different animals. FORD OEM Tractors were specified to use 10 x 28 tires on the rear, which equates to 11.2 x 28 in today's world. Tires and rims were measured different back then. Hat Rims were 28 x 9. I'm not sure if 12.4 tires will fit on them or if a 28 x 10 rim is needed. FWIW & FYI: On the first two years of the 8N; 48 & 49, and the rear tires used were the Firestone Champion Guide Grip/Spade Grip style with closed bar centers. When I restored my early 8N I purchased a new set of these to make all period correct. I'd sell the pair -see email. I also have a pair of OEM Hat Rims with 8N Center Discs, completely restored. These had never been loaded with Calcium Chloride and the FORD/KELSEY-HAYES logos are stamped on the inside band on them clearly with a date code and size, 28 x 9 -see pix. These are also for sale. I bought set of rears from tucker tire for my 8n and they came with new rims installed. The only way to go in my book.

The rim size is the same for both the 11.2 and the 12.4.

If you have no rust holes in your rims, they should be fine.

The bigger the tire the bigger the bucks. The 11.2 is a standard size for the N series and will cost you less than the 12.4. You might ask around a couple of local tire shops to see if they know of anyone who has a set of used tires for sale, or watch Craigslist.

Where did you get the OEM tires? I’d l9ke a set for my ‘48 8N.

IMO the 12.4 x 28's are too large for the N series. That is what I have on mine and wish I had gone with the 11.2 x 28's
