We have a John Deere B with a riveted tag with only the numbers 239 located near the governor. Is this the SN and how do you determine anything from it.

Pics would be helpful. Is this a brass tag that is oval/football shape with large numbers? There should still be a rectangular shape tag with the model B etc on it.

The tag is about 1 x 1/2 with the numbers 239. Where would the bigger tag be located in relation to this one on or near the governor. This tractor has the enclosed flywheel with a custom cab so it is hard to see much in that area. I can send pictures next week but not sure that will help much with the cab on it. It is an interesting set up so will send pictures.

Enclosed flywheel sounds like a late B, so the serial tag should be on top of the main case, clutch side, below the distributor/magneto.

My B has the tag on the right hand case under the mag. It should say something like this. This is for my B

We found it, haven't cleaned it up enough to read it yet. With a custom cab on it it is hard to get too.

I have a John Deere B that had a unreadable serial number plate. So I got a propane torch, a Scotch-Brite scrubber, and a wet rag. I first went over the plate LIGHTLY with the torch to bake off the grease and grime. If you get the plate to hot it will warp/melt, which you don't want. I then commenced in a hours worth of scrubbing, every 10 minutes I would wipe it off with the rag. I got all of the stuff stuck off and wiped it off with the rag, dried it, got a fresh scrubber and polished it to a high shine. I then gave it a light mist of WD-40 to keep it from rusting.

A friend in North Dakota had the B and found this cab and adapted to the tractor. Around here it is known as the pope mobile as in
the Christmas parade a local Priest drove it. He was raised on a farm ad new something about the B JD
