1949 John Deere M T Steering

My 1949 John Deere M T steering shaft that attatches to the worm shaft with a key (I presume)and is tightened with a hex bolt, has play, and needs to be separated to find the problem. The steering shaft,or rod goes through the cast iron dash unit. I can't figure out what is holding it from comming out. There has to be some kind of a keeper. that puzzels me. The steering wheel is the adjustabe type with notches, and a tightener. Les W.

The book says pull the steering shaft back far enough to line up the groove pin with the large hole in the steering tube and remove the pin. Looks like you have to remove the hood and the hole you're looking for will be just ahead of the dash.
