1949 John Deere Model A startup question

Ok guys Here is a good problem for you guys to think about. I just bought a John Deere Model A 49 ... Has electric start.. First off if you pull the throttle all the way down it will cut off because throttle lever isn't adjusted.. When I try to start it like our other A by putting about idle pulling choke and starting it will not start at all. The only way to start it is go full throttle and pull the choke and it will fire up. It runs good once started, but doesn't idle great, Sounds fine at wide open throttle, but when i pull it down to idle(were i think it should) it just sounds different. Anyway just wondering what some possible problems could be, would it be wise to put carb at stock setting on the needles(and i do not know what that is and have no clue which mixture is lowend etc.). If anyone has any specific questions that you need to know to help me solve this problem i would appreciatte it.. thanks.

Your carb needs to be sent to www.poppinjohn carbs for a good professional cleaning !!! Money well spent. But, you can remove the carb and dump it in the good carb cleaner that's in the steel gallon can. Berrymans I beleive. It'll still need to be drilled out to clean the passages. Remove the needles, float bowl, brass screws. Clean everywhere you can. Search around here and you can find the way to properly adjust the carb.

Are you sure the throttle plates are starting
to open when you push the lever ahead?

From the sounds of your description it's all
in the linkage adjustment & carb setting.

No two tractor are the same. Most 2 cylinders
we have won't fire @ WOT.

Thanks for info. I have contacted poppinjohn and their' going to rebuild it to new and we'll go from there.. he said he thinks its the idle circuit and jets are probrably trashed and dirty.

It has been a long time ago but didn't some A models with mags were designed to be killed by pulling the throttle all the way back. I worked for a guy that had a 49 that was that way.

Only the older A's could be pulled back all the way, yours is Supposed To shut off with the throttle. Your carb has plugged idle passages & you must use a drill bit to clean them.
