1950 John Deere A , reduction gear,

My A has a set of gears ,on crank to reduction gear on transmission, filler plug at top of case, drain near bottom,I pulled the bottom plug and a little water, then some off colored oil. came out, teaspoon maybe, I assume they should have a small amount of lubricant in there? Tech manual doesn,t specify. JR.

Have you checked the transmission/final drive?

That plug is to drain condensate when changing oil. Takes a pint of the same oil you put in the engine.

The manual for my JD 730 says to use the same heavy gear oil as the transmission for the first reduction gear, not engine oil. I would think an A would be the same.

Except the the H, the letter series didn't get oiled from the transmission. It came from the main bearing and got recirculated back.
