1950 john deere B

just bought a 1950JD B couple weeks ago. now the clutch won't disengage, the clutch pulley runs all the time so can't get it back into gear, shut tractor off and put it in gear but then when starting it, it will try to start with it in gear. it was missing the side plate on pulley so it got rusty on outside , could that be the problem with rust probably on the inside also? previous owner said he never had any problems

Take the clutch apart and inspect ALL of the friction linings..one may be broken and wedging, causing that problem..

Also, while the clutch-drum is off, clean and lube all pivots...along with the main crankshaft-clutch Bearing..

All parts must operate easily and the friction linings should be in good condition..

Would you believe, the clutch-drum is supposed to be removed and parts lubricated Twice each Year..?..

I bet that NEVER happened ( along with Greasing the front Fan-Shaft Bearing) or Brake pedals either..

Ron..

Also check the clutch dogs on the back side of the pulley that they have a little lubricant. I would also check the 3 adjusting bolts that they move easy. If not remove the cotter keys and pull them out and clean them up good and run emery cloth thru the holes then just lightly grease, they should wiggle real easy.

Like Ron said, remove, tear it down and inspect all parts. Check the bronze bushing.I would put a new bearing and race in while you have it off. I pack those with Moly Extreme pressure grease. Parts are easily available , and not terribly expensive. A little love goes a long ways on those clutches , they are so simple in design. That bearing gets neglected more than any other part on the tractor.

Hi Keith I am wondering if you may have excessive end play in your crankshaft. To much end play will allow the clutch fork to limit out before the clutch disengages. Give that a try, good luck.
