About a year ago I used my B to pull a float in a parade. Towards the end of the parade the clutch started smoking and the tractor stopped moving. I wasn't able to get round to fixing it until a little while ago. Today I unknowingly removed the cover for the oil that's between the steering column and the "dash" with the gauges on it. There was absolutely no oil left in it. I think this may have been the cause of the clutch problem. When I took the cover off, some dirt, leaves, and gasket material fell into where the oil goes. I have a few questions: 1) What should I use to get the leaves, dirt, etc. out of there? I was thinking a shop vac would work. 2) What kind of oil do I put in and how much? 3) How likely is it that the clutch is damaged? Any and all help would be appreciated.

A tad confused as to what cover you mean...do you mean the crankcase cover? It's the cover that sits flat between the steering column and the dash with several bolts and a gasket underneath? If there is no oil in there then your clutch side crank bearing seal went and allowed all your oil out onto the clutch which caused it to slip. If that is the case, then the issue becomes how long did you run it with no oil in the crankcase, did you lose oil pressure? If you shut it down fairly quickly then prolly no big deal. Clutch will have to come off, seal replaced, and I would replace the fiber discs in the clutch, although I have seen guys boil the oil out of 'em with a torch and then some brake parts cleaner...not the worst or most expensive thing you can do to her!
Next thime you are muttering to your self about doing a JD radiator, you can remember how easy this job was as opposed to splitting an inline tractor! Good luck
BTW, as far as the junk that fell in, take your oil plug and fuiletr out, use a light and reach down in and grab the stuff, then plug her up and pour in a couple gallons of kero, tien the engine by hand a couple times, rock her to slosh it around, drain and refill w oil and a new filter and let 'er rip!

It sounds like the oil return hole is plugged. Oil bleeds out through the right hand main bearing (no seal here) and runs into the first reduction housing (which explains why you have oil in your clutch). The oil cannot return to the sump and this causes both of your problems. Take off the crankcase cover, clean out all the crap and also clean out the return hole. Odds are your crankcase is full of sludge and needs a flush badly. This can be done easily and there are many posts in the archives on how to do this. You may get lucky and might not have hurt the engine but don't be surprised if you did hurt it. Mike

Where exactly do you think 7 quarts of oil went? Was there an external leak?

When you look straight down into the crankcase you will not see any oil. Your looking at the top of the starter cavity. Look farther ahead with a light and you'll find your oil. There is an oil level indicator on right side of tractor below first reduction cover.

Also, there is no crank seal, the oil runs through a drainback hole in the cover and is the source of your issue.

Buy an owners manual and do some reading please!!

Yeah, it's the crankcase cover. Sorry my explanation wasn't very clear. Do you happen to know what kind of oil goes in there? Thanks very much for your help.
