1951 case D float adjustment

Good evening im the new owner of a 1951 case D and I need help setting the float hight. What hight should it be set to and should set the hight with the gasket on? My carb is a Zenith model B carb. Also what should I set all the tuning screws to?

turn the top half upside down with the float. eye up the float. it must be sitting level. that's what float level means. experienced mechanic's just eye. up floats. then adjust accordingly . i dont have the actual float height handy here. i think its 1 5/32 from the bare surface , no gasket. main load screw about 2-2 1/2 turns out . idle mixture about 1 turn out. then once running set the timing to spec. then u adjust the carb. idle around 400 rpm.

This an odd question but. My tractor is running super rich and I think the float hight was the problem because. When I would turn the fuel cut off on all the way it would start dripping alot out of the bottom hole on the carberator. This forces me to only run the tractor with the fuel cut off valve a 1/4 way out. As soon as I turn off the tractor it starts to leak again with the valve off. I dont know if this is a carb float problem or something elese?

your needle and seat is leaking. when the float raises it closes the needle preventing more gas from entering the bowl. ALSO... the float maybe heavy meaning it has a hole in it. then it cant close the needle.

this valve your taking about is on the sediment bowl. many times they dont actually cut off the gas either. they are worn or gummed up. remove the line from carb and close the sediment bowl valve and see if it stops the gas flow.

I tested the float in water and know it's good. OK that what I was thinking that the needle and seat is bad the only reason why I kept refusing that it was bad because the carb was sent out to a company to be rebuild 2 years ago. And before and during the two years the tractor had a spark issue so it never ran with the new carb until recently. So maybe the need and seat were defective or warped over time.

I did do that and it keeps the fuel cut off but good idea I did not think of that.

just shake the float , you will feel the gas sloshing around in it and it will be heavy. not going to tell sticking it in water. so you have taken this rebuilt apart ?

Yes after the tractor did not want to run when I fixed the spark issue. So i thought the float adjustment was off so I set it to 1 5/32 and that is when the tractor now ran but It started to run really rich and the adjustment would not make a difference.

Yes but then it runs out of fuel
Ooh man , well yes it will. You’re not grasping what I am saying. If you shut off the gas it will go from flooding to running good hill it runs out of gas. It’s called diagnosing the flooding problem.

Well yes , needle and seat maybe piece of dirt in seat , or heavy float that dont shut off the gas. The float closes the needle. Plus the float drop needs to be checked also. If it’s dropping to the bottom of the bowl it might be hanging up and not floating. If your lost on this carb take it in to get it checked out.

I'm going to try replacing needle, seat and gasket. If it still does not work I'm going to contact the company that rebuilt the carb. Thank you for your help and advice I appreciate! Have a great night.
