Hello to all 1951 owners---I am thinking about buying a TO-20--I am assuming it is with a SN.---TO-39933. Tractor was used last year to bush hog a 10 acre tract or parts of it with no problem.
Tractor needs a paint job and cleaning. I saw maybe one oil leak around the PTO handle--the plate had a little oil around it. Needs a 11x2x28 tire and the other one is great.
I can buy this tractor and bush hog for about $500 bucks. It has no charging system--generator is not wired so I assume it does not work. Basically it needs all oil levels changed / air filter. Guy said it smokes a little not much and was told it is gas smoke and runs rough at times.
I also assume the tractor is a 20 hp---how about being under powered for box blade-- 5 ft.bush hog and garden tiller 4ft.wide.
I have a 18.5 Diesel about 1/2 the size and light in the front end.
Tell me I am not going wrong---Will be used with the implements mentioned above.
Any and all advise accepted----Thanks James

P.S. Should have changed the subject on the other post---Sorry

$500 for a running machine is very cheap.
Garden tiller? Does this machine have an extra handle on the right side under the seat?
better known as a Howard rotary transmission?
If so, the trans alone is worth a grand in good condition. If no handle then trying to use a tiller is painful.
Handle on the left side is the PTO engagement handle. The other side is what you looking for.
Charge the battery, use the machine and recharge the battery. Leave it on a trickle charger and life is good.
That"s my two cents. Especially as dinner is now being served. Merry Christmas!

No it's not under powered mine works great with brush hog & blade You will be very happy with it's ability to do what you ask of it and how easy it to work on for tune ups and such. Oh thats a great buy!

Hey Guys--Thanks for the information.--Being underpowered was my main concern. The tractor comes with a bush hog. The box blade and Befco Garden tiller is with my other small tractor. The Satoh Buck will come off the ground in the front end when lifting the tiller which is pretty heavy. The Buck is not much bigger than a good size riding mower but it runs perfect for a small 18.5 hp tractor.
The handle under the seat on the right side of the TO-20, I am not sure. Today I am going to really check it out and do some driving around and bush hog a little.
Apparently once engaged the PTO has to stop turning before you can disengage it--do they have a clutch--my Buck will stop when engaging the clutch.
Chatting with you guys gives me some things to check and scope out.
I know it has brakes on both rear wheels for turning. I saw a PTO lever on the left side of transmission--a gear shift--throttle---hyd. lever---I will check for the lever on the right side under seat. This lever is it similar to a low geared transmission. My Bucks PTO will operate at different speeds.
The TO-20 PTO gear box what is suppose to be the functions so I can check it--does it just engage / disengage.
Thanks a million----James
P.S. I am really geared toward buying it for a work tractor to replace my smaller Buck.

Yes if you press on clutch the pto will stop the 3pth will only work when the pto is on. To engage pto just step on clutch engage pto lever do this runnig in neutral of course so you can watch the 3pth work and pto spin. the howard tranns. is pretty rare but the lever looks alot like the pto handle. I know you will love these tractors like i do.

It should work fine with everything but the tiller. The tractor is geared too high and can't slow enough to till.

Hi Guys-----The TO-20 does not have the Howard style transmission as mentioned. No pto handle or any handle under the seat on right side.
Transmission is a 4 speed / reverse--PTO in-out.
The bush hog I mentioned does not have a slip clutch on the PTO drive, so that is why the bush hog does not stop turning when clutch is depressed.
The tractor does run good, but smokes a little when it is working. I guess I need to check the compression on each cylinder and by the way it does have a Z-120 gas engine.
The tractor does move pretty fast and I can imagine it not being able to till a garden. Is there any other opinions on the tiller use.

Thanks---James
Thanks for the information

James i have done it the ground wasn't hard the garden gets plowed every year but i had to do it twice.I hope you can get a good deal on it.
