Here we go folks...I have 12 volt, electronic ign. It was running
then died. Carb float is set,new coil, timing set. I have spark to
plugs. Switch is working. Try to start and maybe run 5-10
seconds then dies. Tried starting fluid not really any help. Any
advice is appreciated. Thanks a million!

Don?t guess at the cause of the problem; guessing can get expensive. And leave you breathless chasing every guess.......it could be this, it could be that......just troubleshoot the problem and leave the guess work for buying Lottery tickets.

As soon as the tractor stops running, not 5 minutes later, check for spark and fuel.

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

It does fill up the jar.It has a good stream coming out. I have spark also. When it does try to start it?ll blow a little smoke out of the carb. (I disconnected the breather tube for now. )

Revjohn .How long has it been setting since the last time it ran good, weeks.months or a year or more? It could be the valves are sticking open, time for a compression check.

I pulled a plug to check for spark plus checked the coil for spark also. Yes sir,I checked the gas first.

Sounds like ignition trouble to me. Ignition switches, especially the after market replacements, are really light duty and have a habit of going open and killing engine when warm and then working again after a jiggle or cooling off. Coils go open after getting hot but you said you replaced it. You can put a jumper across ignition switch to eliminate it.

It was running -when? Before or after you did the 12-volt conversion? You say you have good fuel flow and spark -so that leaves me to believe it is a wiring issue. Compression would be the next step usually, but I'd be verifying the wiring is all correct first -there are several ways to do 12-volt convulsions, but only a handful of correct ways. Seek out Wiring Pictograms by JMOR and download a copy to see all the correct ways to wire these old N's whether 6 volt or 12 volt.

Tim,the conversion was already done when I bought it. It had been running fine. One day last week I started it,ran about a minute and died. One gentleman said maybe floor switch is bad. Possible I guess. I agree though, seems like a electrical problem.

The starter switch on top of the transmission cover has nothing to do with your stated problem. Google "wiring diagrams JMOR" . That switch is in the starting circuit. Your problem is in the ignition circuit. If the tractor starts, the switch is fine.

Floor switch? No, I don't think so. You said the tractor started, ran about a minute then died. The starter button had already done its job by making the electrical connection/ground to allow it to start. After that it is out the picture. Like I said, get out your essential manuals and verify wiring is correct. Also get a copy of Wiring Pictograms by JMOR as a correct guide to a 12 volt conversion. Don't rely on what the previous owner did or said -chances are he had issues and his 'solution' was to slap a 12 volt battery in.

How long have you owned this tractor? Is this problem something that has just popped up, or has this been a problem ever since you owned the tractor?

You stated that it has electronic ignition, is this something you installed recently? If not I believe the electronic ignition is your culprit. Can you switch it back to battery ignition to see if that makes any difference.
