I have what I believe is a 1952 Model A (Square Axle) The serial number tag under the distributor is unreadable because my dad had a wrench over the PTO lever and the other end under the distributor, where it pounded the tag. Are there any casting numbers, etc, that might narrow down the manufacture date?

Good point Steven. For the styled A, they had a water pump at serial number 700200 to the last John Deere A at 703304. Your tractor would be in that serial number range if you have a water pump. Year would be 1952 If not, the late styled JD--A could be from 1947 to 1951?

The square axle housing came in 1950. I assume if you are thinking it is a 1952 it also has a single stick six speed. Depending on how bad the tag is, you might be able to remove it and read it (or transfer it with paper and pencil) from the back of the tag.
