1954 FARMALL "A"

I FOUND A 1954 FARMALL "A" FOR SALE ON CRAIGS LIST IN GOOD SHAPE FOR A FARE PRICE. IM NOT TOO FERMILAR WITH FARMALL SO I THOUGHT ID ASK THE EXPERTS, I HAVE A COUPLE OLD JOHN DEERE AND ALWAYSE LIKED THE LOOK OF THR FARMALL.

QUESTION... DOSE THE FARMALL "A" HAVE A THREE POINT HITCH?
WHAT IS THE HP OF THIS TRACTOR?
ANY PERTICUPER PROBLEMS OR ISSUES WITH THIS TRACTOR?

If the tractor is indeed a 1954, then it would be a Super A with about 17 horse power. If it is an A they were only made from 1939 to 1947 and the horse power about 13. Nice little tractors.

It's a Super A. Main difference from an A is live hydraulics. No 3 point, can be had from other places. Drawbar HP factory is 17, can be increased to low 20's with thinner sleeves and larger pistons. For a 61 year old tractor anything can be wrong, there were no factory problems that needed correcting. I have a 53 SA, no problems at all with it -- I did restore it including engine overhaul. No Farmall letter/early numbered tractor had problems, Early 58-60(58)ones did, that was corrected by IH.

After market 3 point hitch is available. No such hitch from IH. The after market hitch has limitations. It uses a short top link fastened to the
rear rockshaft crossbar. It will work for some implements but not all. Lifting capacity will be 500 lbs max. The superA is a very good long life
tractor with many still in regular use.

Not meaning to steal the thread, but what problems did the early 140s have that was corrected?? Just curious.

ALso, to add to the discussion. If yours is definitely a 1954 it could very well be a "Super A-1" rather than a Super A. Measure the height of the front nose peice and tell us if it has a water pump towards the bottom of the engine on the generator side.

I meant no problems with any Farmall until 1958 which was the 460/560 mostly 560, I never heard any problems with the 140. The SA1 had a chassis serial of 356001-357958 with a 123 cu inch engine, Prefix for the engine serial is FCM like in the C/SC(C was 113) Easiest way to identify is the space between the hyd reservoir and the gas tank.
