I am trying to replace starter solenoid on my Ford 640 that has been converted from 6 volt to 12 volt. After connections made tractor won't shut off with key start and cable from solenoid to starter is hot - I'm guessing that I have an incorrect connection?

Thank you, John

You either have the wrong solenoid, the tractor isn't wired properly for the correct solenoid or you mixed up wires. Once a tractor has been modified the wheel of guessing gets bigger.

this is how i had wired my ford 850- prior to installing a volt meter--

if you just got an ammeter this will do ya.

i mean on mine, the lug closest to the starter was the one i went with- (left side) and the right side lug closest to the steering wheel is the battery one. (thats if you got the default solenoid location to the left of the oil bath housing) people put that solenoid in funny places sometimes

The solenoid I got from Yesterday Tractor has a button/plunger on the bottom. Does anyone know what this for/purpose? Also, any idea to check to see if solenoid is good?
Thank you, JR

Had to keep tapping the solenoid to start tractor. Originally solenoid was clicking before it would turn over/start.

That button will cause the starter to crank. I tried one of those a few years ago and did not have much luck. I eventually replaced it.
