Good day, new to forum. Have a 1959 871D, live in Green Bluff Washington. Started tractor up and drove about 200 yards. Started hearing metal grinding around the bell housing. It wad putting enough bind on that the engine started pulling hard and died. I tried starting again and the starter just spun and didn't engage. Pulled starter and the star drive was gone accept for one piece on s ledge in the bell housing. Pulled the piece out, looked down in the bell housing with an inspection camera, no pieces of starter drive found. Installed a new starter and started it up. Serious binding and metal sound not in engine block but either in bell housing or in that area. Tried to unbolt inspection plate on bell housing to look inside, no joy. Engine will run but binds up and dies. Any suggestions.

Am guessing part of the starter drive is wedged down in the bell housing between the flywheel and housing or part of the clutch.

You might want to post this down in the manufactures section where there is a dedicated Ford Forum (assuming this is a Ford). Give all the details you can to help narrow the responses, such as this is a diesel with a Select-O-Speed (based on the 871D). And things like how long you have had it and any maintenance/repairs recently done to it can be helpful at times.

STOP trying to run the engine until you do whatever it takes (including splitting the tractor) to get the drive pieces out of there!

You are lucky a piece hasn't already been bashed out through the flywheel housing casting!

Not as far as I know. You need to split it.

How far around the flywheel could you get with your inspection camera? And, is it the type of camera that you can flex and poke around corners and into tight places? Or is it something like the camera on a cellphone?

With the starter off there should be some access at least part way around the flywheel, but not very far I don't think. I'm thinking you'll need to split it.

I would definitely not try to run it till you figure out what exactly is wrong and get it fixed though.

Hello Green Bluff, welcome to YT! I don’t know the exact configuration of the outer diameter of the flywheel on your Ford, but If you need proof that it is a piece of the starter rubbing on the flywheel pull your starter back out and look at the outside of the flywheel. If it is rubbing hard enough to stall the engine I am pretty sure you’ll see evidence of the damage you are creating. Unfortunately things like this happen that require a larger repair effort than expected such as having to split the tractor.

it should be very easy to tell if u have ALL the broken starter pieces out, as you have to tell us. then that eliminates one thing.

I worked on a roller several years ago, I believe it was case but a very early one, had 4BT CDC engine, customer complained it wouldn't start, field tech deemed it a bad ring gear, had it hauled to the shop where I got it, I started investigating and pulled the starter, no drive on starter, went fishing in the bell housing with a magnet, pulled out one starter drive but heard something rattle on the way out, went fishing again, out with another complete drive, had the boss call the customer, customer says oh yeah we had to replace a bad starter a while ago but don't what the issue was, I installed and new starter and all was well!

That’s what I am saying. A person should know if he has all the pieces out. As he says only only got one piece out.

It is a snap on tools camera. There is not much room even for the small flexible camera but I could not see the other pieces anywhere.

If there is something behind or around the flywheel you can't see, you need to split it.

If that is clear either there is a transmission issue or an engine issue either will likely need a split.

In any case, you need to split it and start at the flywheel area to find the issue. Don't be running it.

I guess this depends on how one reads his original post and understands it. I understood there were pieces still in there when he posted, the star drive was missing except one piece he found setting on a ledge in there, just that he couldn't see them.
