If there is something behind or around the flywheel you can't see, you need to split it.

If that is clear either there is a transmission issue or an engine issue either will likely need a split.

In any case, you need to split it and start at the flywheel area to find the issue. Don't be running it.

Good day, new to forum. Have a 1959 871D, live in Green Bluff Washington. Started tractor up and drove about 200 yards. Started hearing metal grinding around the bell housing. It wad putting enough bind on that the engine started pulling hard and died. I tried starting again and the starter just spun and didn't engage. Pulled starter and the star drive was gone accept for one piece on s ledge in the bell housing. Pulled the piece out, looked down in the bell housing with an inspection camera, no pieces of starter drive found. Installed a new starter and started it up. Serious binding and metal sound not in engine block but either in bell housing or in that area. Tried to unbolt inspection plate on bell housing to look inside, no joy. Engine will run but binds up and dies. Any suggestions.

You need the service manual for your tractor. The correct Ford manual is best. Check out the manuals sold on this site.

You are going to have to separate the tractor at the engine and transmission bell housing interface. Do you have a shop with a good floor to work on? A floor jack or engine crane/cherry picker? What is your mechanical background? Any friends to give you a hand? It is not rocket science, but it can be dangerous if not done correctly.

You are going to have to separate the tractor at the engine and transmission bell housing interface. Do you have a shop with a good floor to work on? A floor jack or engine crane/cherry picker? What is your mechanical background? Any friends to give you a hand? It is not rocket science, but it can be dangerous if not done correctly.

I do have a mechanical background, It would be a stretch to try and put the tractor in the garage. I do have a concrete pad in one of my fields. It is not covered though. I have a floor jack.

S-O-S transmission uses a torque limiter not a clutch doesn't it? The pedal on the left is for the inching valve isn't it.

I do have a mechanical background, It would be a stretch to try and put the tractor in the garage. I do have a concrete pad in one of my fields. It is not covered though. I have a floor jack.

Tools, a floor jack, a couple bottle jacks and some blocking and you should be able to do it. A few hard wood wedges can be handy as well. You will want one driven in on each side of the front axle to hold the engine upright on the axle.

Was it ever confirmed that it had a SOS transmission? If the 871 came with only that transmission I was not aware of it.

Edit: per tractordata it did. I'd like to see that confirmed by the original poster though.

He has not confirmed it, but he didn't say I was wrong when I posted I understood 871D as a diesel with the S-O-S. The info I found on TractorData is that is an 871. Gas, LP or Diesel just the S-O-S transmission.

Before you split it, I would suggest having a local mechanic look at it. I mean no disrespect to your mechanical abilities. It's always a good idea to have a second set of eyes on the machine before as big of a job as a split.

To clear any confusion. Please tell which transmission your 871 has; 4 speed, 5 speed, or Select-O-Speed, in case the info I posted is wrong. A Select-O-Speed transmission does not have an engine clutch like the 4 and 5 speeds.

Just a thought, have you tried turning the flywheel in the reverse direction and see if the bind loosen up?

Yes it is the auto transmission.

None taken. I have worked on minor tractor projects but nothing to this high degree. I have had one person look at it, but they were not a mechanic. None of the shops around here would even look at it. I will see if I can find someone that may have tractor mechanical abilities around here.

He means turn the engine by hand in the opposite direction of normal rotation. You might be able to do it with the fan and fanbelt, or a socket on the crankshaft nut on the pulley, or by taking the starter off and using a pry bar on the flywheel teeth.

Ford "Select-O-Speed" is the name for your transmission. It is a very good thing that it is working fine. Your tractor has no clutch as the 4 and 5 speed gear transmissions have.

The cover of the Ford Service manual I have looks like this. The I&T manual is # FO-20. Have both might be helpful to you.
