1960 Case Loader Backhoe External hydraulic pump versus

Hello all, I have a 1960 540 Case loader backhoe. I am wondering what the Hydraulic pump drive connects to as I do not have a 3 point hitch and it is plated closed. The Parts manual and service manual does not show what the gear connects to, and it is a backhoe loader with an external hydraulic pump? It has a dry clutch and a shuttle NO case-o-matic. I am very confused. Also, the throw out bearing is on the pump drive that is connected to the pressure plate by spline so rides on a live shaft. Anyone with any ideas as to how this live shaft and throw out bearing work together as my throw out bearing carrier is way dished out from the yoke when disengaging the clutch disk, the bearing unit is spinning against the yoke that is not spinning?

I am not real familiar with the Case back hoes so I
cannot picture what you are talking about. Maybe
someone else can answer your question. Either way I
think a picture of what you are talking about with the
throw out bearing would be helpful. In the linked post I
give a run down on picture posting.
Post to reference

I could be totally wrong about this but I doubt the tractor has the internal pump installed if no hydraulics valves are on the top plate under the tank. Could you post a picture of the top plate as there are maybe clues, the pump drive has a feature to disengage the internal pump when not used. I am a bit surprised you say it has the hydraulic valve cover on the top plate which would allow for the pump to be there and circulate oil but would have no purpose. If you are considering running any size at all backhoe the tractors internal pump is totally inadequate at any rate, they were not a high volume or pressure system. The throwout bearing shell is turning with the shaft but the part of the bearing you cannot see has a hardened steel flat face that runs on ball bearings and is stationary with the yoke when the clutch is pushed, sounds like that part is working as designed.

Hello Tractor Guru, I think you are saying what I have been saying. OK so I will take the Hydraulic Pump Drive out tomorrow and see what is behind it I will take some pictures and videos but not sure how to upload them here. I got down and looked at it real close yesterday and spun it buy hand, it felt like it was not attached to anything, but I guess it would still have to have fluid of some sort or it would get hot and burn, I guess. I have been reading the shop manual and looking at the parts book for days trying to figure out what its purpose was to no avel. Everything I read in these books talk about a specific unit then always go into something else like if it has a case-o-matic take this out and if it has a triple drive do this and if it is a dual range do this then the next section which is like say paragraph 121 case-o-matic well, why did you just talk about this in the last section about a Dual range or the shuttle drive and I am like is this section, shuttle drive still talking about the case-o=matic or did it go back to the original subject. but I digress. No there is not any hydraulics in the case, I think, because it has an external hydraulic pump attached to the crank in front and the pto area has a plate where the pto drive shaft would be, because it is a loader backhoe.............Now on with the throw out bearing, my way of thinking on this is, if the shaft that the throw out bearing is riding on is connected to the pressure plate it is always spinning and there is a spring pushing the throw out bearing and carrier against the pressure plate so the throw out bearing unit is always spinning too. Now I think the throw out bearing should ride backwards, compared to say a non-live shaft the bearing riding on or a normal car, because the yoke needs to have a spinning unit stop spinning and the bearing end should be where the yoke can push against something that can stop spinning. I have talked to different people about this, and they knowing way more than me about tractors say no way it would spark and burn; they could not see what I was saying. these guys are tractor mechanics and are being very helpful with letting me know where to get parts or getting parts for me so I just back off to be polite and not alienate myself. Also I am just learning about tractors so what do I know, and I picked a dusy, dussy something like that.

Hello, I am not sure who is who in this replay it says used red MN and below that it says Tractor Guru. Anyway, I will try to figure out what the post address you sent says as it is truncated when I click and go to address. thank you

Test post a picture.

Well I guess I figured out how to post a pic sort of as I posted one pic 2 times and the other one I wanted to post.. See how worn the bearing carrier is? it was inserted like a car one so it spun against the yoke and wore it out.

Under a User's handle it will have: New User (like yours shows), Regular, Tractor Expert, or Tractor Guru (like used red MN shows). Those are just site usage titles, bestowed on the member by this site, based on the total number of posts a user has made on the site.

Look closely at the bearing assembly, you will see across from your thumb a mark , that was a nub that sticks out so the bearing assembly is turning with the shaft by being driven by the clutch finger, it for some reason has worn off. You are correct , it has to turn with the shaft and that nub that is gone keeps it turning with the shaft by the spring keeping it pushed foward. Do not listen to anyone who tells you the bearing belongs toward the clutch fingers, they simply do not have a clue! Being the buggerhead that I am, if the bearing is not dry and turns smoothly if this is not an everyday worker, i would probably weld up a spot on the worn face and file it square so the fingers drive it and reuse it, I do not know the cost but maybe for you replacement is the better option.

I cropped pics still need to go take videos on old phone that I can set lower resolution. I could not figure out how to set lower resolution on newer phone.

I tried 2 different cameras; I can't get the videos or pictures small enough to post.

Maybe only one pic a day. I made them around 2000kb or less.

Hello mEI, I am not sure if I am in the dog house for posting such big byte pictures since I can not post pictures because I have not heard from anyone, but here goes. My Case 540 like we talked about does not have any eternal hydraulics also there isn't any case-o-matic. The torque tube is pretty much empty, there is a shuttle and a manual transmission and of course finals but no kind of hitch in the torque tube. My Parts book and service books go into these areas very little and when it starts to go into the shuttle it is brief and then goes off into the case-o-matic or triple range. So, my question is, well do I fill all those empty spaces with 90w multipurpose fluid along with the shuttle and 4 speed transmission? I went to Napa and they said most tractors use the transmission fluid. I said I do not think it uses any tranny fluid I think it uses 90 w or 140 w multipurpose. I am confused still because these areas are so brief in my books. It does say on page 19 of my operator's manual about case-o-matic reservoir using 10w motor oil and the manual transmission case using 90, 90w, I do not know if they are making a point of 90 and 90w being different, nothing about the shuttle. I know the 1st part is the bell housing (clutch area) then the pump area without a pump it has a pump drive that I assume needs oil because there is a bearing in the pump drive, I guess I should fill that up with oil or 90 w I do not know which. I have looked and looked through all 3 of the books I have. Then next behind the empty pump area is where the Shuttle is, I guess it is like a manual transmission and needs 90 w there the 3 books do not say what the shuttle dual range needs. Then next is the manual transmission that needs 90 w multipurpose gear oil. The operator's manual says 17 quarts of 90-w (most multipurpose lubricants (ep) are of extreme pressure type).
then the operator's manual says steering gear housing needs SAE no. 140 multipurpose lubricant (ep) (extreme pressure) and last power steering reservoir needs 1-quart automatic transmission fluid type A. thank you
