1963 Ford 2000 Insufficient fuel Issue

My 1963 Ford 2000 gas tractor was running around fine without any load, as soon as I hooked up a bush hog, it went about 25 yards with no power until it died. It was backfiring terribly but I played with the timing and it seemed to cure the backfiring but not too he lack of power and dying.

As soon as it died, I switched off the fuel and drained the carb bowl from the screw on the bottom and got about 2 to 3 tablespoons of fuel. I have replicated this a couple of times with the same results. The fuel to the carb and sediment bowl, which is new, is strong and steady. I think I have narrowed it down to a problem in the carb, possibly a needle valve or float problem preventing the carb from getting sufficient fuel to operate under load.

Am I looking at a carb rebuild or is there any other service items that I can do?

Thanks..!!

If it has the M/S carb on it in the elbow where the fuel line hooks to the carb should be a filter screen and if it is clogged it will cause that. Or the gas tank vent could be clogged which will pull a vacuum in the tank so you get low flow. One should be able to pull the carb drain plug and get a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes. Also if you have an inline fuel filter in the system that is where your problem is throw it away

Before going into the carb, check the point gap and side play in the distributor shaft. It needs to have very little play or the points won't stay set. Check the centrifugal advance, it should turn a few degrees and spring back freely. Be sure it has a strong spark at each plug, should be able to jump 1/4" from the plug wire to ground.

Usually a lean condition will respond favorably to a partial choke.

Some carbs have a screen in the inlet fitting.

Could be a piece of trash in the float valve seat restricting the flow.

The carb is simple and basic. If the bowl will separate without tearing the gasket you might can just open it up, clean it out, see what it will do.
