1963 JD 1010 Tractor -Gas
Been having trouble with bouncing 3 point hitch. Doesn’t bounce while raising or lowering just trying to steady a light load have removed the hydraulic system. I have separated the rock shaft assembly / piston assembly/ front assembly. This is a dual piston assembly with a single rock shaft. My question is: I don’t see an o ring on the piston. There’s not one in the parts diagram. I have the piston assembly on the bench. If I reach in and put pressure on one of the pistons, fluid gets around the pistons easily. My mind says this isn’t correct. Anyone have insight as to whether I’m thinking correctly? How does the piston seal out fluid from entering the cylinder from behind?

Hello CopiCatt, welcome to YT! In your left diagram 54 would be the seal and 53 is probably a backer of some type.

Thank you. So am I correct that the fluid should not pass the piston into the bore at all?

Probably not, that would be the only way it could hold up a load with the engine off.

Question 1; That is not correct. No 2; you are thinking correct. No: 3 you need a oring or seal the piston to seal out the fluid. On a groove at the end of the piston should be a backup washer and a rubber seal. Is there a groove at the end of the piston or is it broke off? You need a seal A3459RT and a back-up washer A3460RT to seal your fluid.

You are correct. I pulled the pistons, and there is a soft backup washer and a rubber seal. Those are now on order!

I have ordered new rockshaft seals, but im having no luck at all removing the right shaft off the arm. Its probably never been off the shaft. I threaded the bolt back in all the way, minus the washer, and have been trying to hit the bolt head with a mini sledge hammer, not budging. There is maybe and 1/8 in gap on the backside. I put a medium size puller on and it broke an ear off the puller. Have tried to add some heat, but i'm sure I can't get it hot enough with a little map pro tank. Think I may try to borrow and air hammer and see if that will do anything.
