hey guys i have a 1970 something f-150 that im trying to get running well to use for plowing and beating around the property in. im having a problem getting it to key start, we have been starting it by pulling it around and it will start right up but when you try to key start it it will crank over but it wont sputter or anything.

If its a later '70s model it has a spark control module on the inner fender that could be bad. It would be a silver box about 4 inches by four inches. I've seen a few bad over the years where as long as your key was in the start position it wouldn't fire a lick. Sometimes when I had given up and let off the start postion, the engine would fire but usually not start. Long story short is - it will not fire when the key is in the start position.

if it starts by pulling it, its getting fire weather it has electronic spark or points. in both cases try this first, clip a wire to the + battery post, then to the + post on the coil and try to start it with the key. If it starts make up a wire and connect it to the starter selenoid small stud marked with an I above it to the + post on the coil, and leave it there.
