I purchased a 1973 MF 135. It has been seeing up in a building for 3 or 4 years. In great shape what steps do I need to take before starting it up. It is a diesel engine

Stored for 3-4 years is not that long for a diesel.

I would crack each oil drain plug, engine and transmission, before cranking. See if any water comes out. You will probably get some water, don't be alarmed, just let it drip out, retighten the plugs. Check the coolant level and oil levels.

Check the fuel level, be sure there is plenty to start.

Look the wiring and hoses over for nests and chewing. Check the air cleaner for blockage and condition.

Put in a known good battery, don't try to charge or jump it. Waiting for a warm day will be a plus.

Give it a spin, see what happens. If it doesn't start within reason, stop. Don't burn up the starter.

If there is no white exhaust smoke, there is no fuel. The kill solenoid may be stuck.

If there is white smoke and no start, could be glow plug problem (if equipped) or lack of compression.

Just to be on the safe side, have a plan to stop it in case of a runaway. Stop the fuel or stop the air.
