1974 JD 310-D backhoe Forward-Reverse problem

We have a 1974 JD 310-D backhoe; it is NOT a JD 310D. The -D on the 70’s series backhoes the "D" suffix was used to explicitly designate a Diesel Engine configuration coupled with the standard heavy-duty Collar Shift transmission layout.

We are looking for photos of the reverser, external linkage connection point; and internal parts where we need to look for a forward-reverse problem. We are trying to get a clear understanding of what to expect to see/find before we go back to the site of the backhoe.

The backhoe will not respond to changes in the forward-reverse lever. With the linkage disconnected, we feel three distinct clicks from the detents. At first, it was locked in reverse; now it is locked in forward.

Any help will be appreciated.
 
Below is a link to the John Deere 310 parts catalog. It has drawings of the linkage valve and other reverser parts.

If you are lucky someone may have a copy of TM 1036, the JD technical model for the 310. JD call your model a 310. The -D (or -B for some 310s is an option. The options are in the manuals for the base machine model. You might want to invest in a copy to have.

Carefully check any roll pins in the linkage. Some of them were known to shear a roll pin and the linkage might or might not move correctly.

Thank you for your response. The references and your suggestion were helpful. The referenced material, although helpful, is grainy and of low resolution. I was also hoping that someone who had the pleasure of disassembling one of these might have some clear photos and would want to share them. At least you've got me off to a good start.
 
Have you changed the hydraulic oil and filter? Checked oil pressure at reverser valve and/or trans port? Reverser control valve may have a sticking plunger or compromised spring.
 
Check for failed pins in box in photo below on control valve on RH side of trans case. Also check operation of reverser external control linkages

I don't know what you expected from the parts catalog, however that is what they are. Drawings of low resolution, with some things shown in phantom lines at times. Purchasing the correct technical manual will give you better info, however not every little thing is shown, and the graphics are generally not high resolution, as they are written for dealer mechanics who may have had some training and prior experience. Equipment is generally not like the Chilton's DIY car manuals.

Hopefully someone will have good pictures to help you with your straight 310 shuttle.

Thank you for pointing this out. My information from above is from unverified online sources. I have also found this unverified source that lists the 5th digit as follows:
5th Character (Engine & Transmission Combo):
B = Diesel, Collar Shift
F = Gasoline, Collar Shift
D = Diesel Engine with Hydraulic Direction Reverser (Power Shuttle)
C = Gasoline Engine with Hydraulic Direction Reverse


At least I was able to learn that the type 310-D is not a JD 310D, which was certainly confusing my research.
I have purchased the pdf version of the service manual to help my neighbor fix his machine. It has been quite helpful, but questions remain. He explained that when he disconnected the linkage at the transmission, and rotated the lever, he could feel three distinct clicks; reverse, neutral, and forward. The manual is clear that there are only two detents, with no neutral.

As soon as he gets his winter firewood cut, he will go back to the backhoe, and we will try to resolve this. All help is appreciated.

I agree that serial # plate adds to the confusion. I was employed at an AG only JD dealer from '65-'87 so my personal knowledge of JD industrial tractors is very limited. The JD AG tractors shared a lot of the same components as the JD ind tractors
 
I believe they started building 310As before the last of the 310s. The 310A (no dash ahead of the letter indicates a series of the model) used a D to indicate the collar shift with reverser. It is possible that designation got put on a 310 tag at the tail end of the 310 model production run when mixed with 310As.

Industrial serial numbers are not near as well documented as the JD Ag tractor serial numbers. I have seen similar issues around the 350 and 450 crawler serial numbers.

While finding an official Service Bulletin or Service Information (SI) letter specifically stating "use B parts if your tag says D" would be the ultimate proof, no such historical document was ever publicly released by John Deere.

The historical evidence is embedded within the structure of your parts manual introduction on Page 2.
