1975 IH Loader/Backhoe 3500A Needs Forward/Reverse Cable

My backhoe listed above has a cable and linkage issue from the column to the trans and I need replacement parts. I can find none. Does anyone have them or know where I can get them?

If this is just a push pull control cable you could measure it up, or remove it, and go to an industrial supply house and try matching it up. Bunker Hill Cables (Millersburg, Ohio) is a place that has a lot of cables (and a good data base of cables for equipment that they have made) and can custom make as well. They have a website you can review.

No idea where you are, but you can check the web for suppliers in your area. You can find info and videos of how to measure control cables on the web as you need, stroke, lengths of several areas, thread info, mounting, and diameters, as well as overall length.

I'm in upstate NY. I was just out there and disassembled the connection to the forward reverse linkage. It seemed to have a ton of play. I am wondering if this cable is not adjustable. What I will continue to do after work tomorrow is remove the cable from behind the dashboard, then check it out a bit and attempt to make it a little shorter, then reinstall. If the linkage on the trans has play into it, perhaps this will tighten it up a piece. Thoughts?

Excessive wear in the linkages at each end of the cable could be the problem. Eliminate all the linkage play you can, that should help. If the cable is moving smoothly in both directions when the linkages are disconnected at both ends it is likely not the cable.

Normally neutral, or center, of the control lever should at the center of the cable's stroke/travel, for a forward/reverse control. If the one cable works both forward and reverse, shortening the connection on the end of the cable to gain travel in that direction, may lose in the other direction.

Fix as much of the linkage play on both ends as you can and center the control and cable, then try it.

Thanks so much Jim. I have full reverse nearly all the time and forward was weakening and then quit. Hopefully adjusting this toward forward will do it. I will follow up.

Yesterday I shored it up as best as I could but appeared to make it worse. It's temp held together with a nice sized nail. I wonder if the issue is not in the "plunger" type mechanism that attaches to the cable and goes into the trans. Maybe today i will try to reverse the washer relocation to see if the condition improves. I feel like i am doing more harm than good.
