Im hoping someone can help me. I have a '84 L8000 with a 3208 cat in it and it would shut off out of no where going down the road so I know I had a broke wire somewhere but everthing else has been working so I just kind of blew it off. well went to start it last night and it was dead and that was odd cause even with the cold weather its been starting just fine. so I jumped it and started well heading out the drive it just died and then wouldn't restart. well long story short I think I found the wire. it seems the ground wire from cab to frame is almost completely rotted in half and when we wiggled it it started. could that bad ground wire cause all of that and cause it not to start also?

thanks,
Zach

It does. I just had a similar situation with the 87 L8000. The wire for the shut off solenoid was unsoldered.

There isn't anything electrical on those old Fords but the shut off. That ground strap is your problem.

The only surprising thing here is that a 31 y/o Louie still has a cab on it...
Yes, a bad ground would most likely be your immediate problem.

Ground wires and ground connections are the most overlooked problem in many cases; people just take them for granted that they are okay when they are not. I always start by checking all ground wires and connections and then work from there if that does not fix the problem.

Exactly same thing I've found. Have seen battery acid eat ground wires, have seen simple corrosion get in fvrame joints and stop the return path of electiricty back to battery. It can all be perfect, but will not work without GOOD ground wires and GOOD connections.
