1994 Ford 4630 No Start

Our 1994 Ford 4630 recently became hard to start requiring a little throttle but would start. Now it turns over fine with a hot battery but doesn't start. I used just a tiny amount of starting fluid and it fired so I think it's a fuel issue.

My question is when the bleed screw on the injector pump is loose should it come out under pressure? It only just bubbles. I've verified fuel flows freely up to the pump.

Question 2 - Anybody rebuild these injector pumps cause $2k for a new one is a hard pill to swallow! TIA

Have you bleed the system all of the way to the injectors?

There is a member here named dieseltech who is a diesel mechanic and he does pump rebuilds via mail. Everyone on here who has used him seems to be satisfied with the quality of his work and his prices.

I haven't got all the way to injectors yet. Had to remove the FEL which was a big pain with no power. Now I can swing out the battery tray and clean up the top of the engine.

There won't be any pressure at the pump bleed screw as it's a gravity system. There SHOULD be more flow with the screw loose and engine CRANKING. There's no feed/supply pump to feed the filters and injection pump on that model.

If your sure you have good flow to the pump remove the bleed screw and crank the engine over, fuel should shoot out a foot or more
If not does your tractor have electric fuel shutdown or cable, if electric check that the solenoid is getting power, if cable you could have a plugged screen in the regulating valve on the back of the pump
I’ve been having issues with a couple tractors plugging that screen, I’ve had to flash the tanks and clean the entire fuel system of algae

It's manual with a pull cable to shutoff fuel. Didn't know about that screen so I'll check that. It definitely doesn't shoot out of the bleed screw only bubbles.

I recommend removing the regulator assembly from the back of the pump and disassembling it on a clean flat surface. There’s a number of small parts inside the regulator assembly that can easily be lost and must be assembled in proper order for it to work
Simply disconnect the back fuel line and remove the four 5/16 screws on the back of the pump to remove the assembly, don’t lose the square cut rubber o-ring that seals the regulator to the pump body

Wow I think that may be above my pay grade but thank you. I could see me doing this and springs flying all over the room! 🤪

Just pay close attention to how it comes apart, snap some photos for reference
My old regulators are slightly different but not by much, each time I’ve removed the screen #30, the valve housing #35 and it’s internal components came out with it, thus the reason I take the regulator assembly off to service the screen
I made the mistake of attempting is on the pump out in a hay field many years ago, dropped one part never to see it again, had to purchase a used regulator assembly to get the tractor going again
