,, I'd like to plow a small field and plant some grain to feed my chickens,,,I have never plowed before, will a 2 bottom plow be okay for my 8n,or will I be better off buying a single, and will I need other implements to do the job?

thanks

That depends on soil. Here I have a sandy loam, my 8N handles a 2-24 plow just fine. A few miles away my brother-in law has heavy clay. All of the tractors he has used through the years have been hooked up to plows 1 bottom smaller than the tractors were rated for. The tractors just don't like the rated bottoms on the hills.

Here I can plow and then use a digger to break it up. In heavier soil you normally have to disk before digging.

I am new to the Ford tractors but I think that the 8N is rated for a 2-12 inch plow.

Your tractor will pull the 2-12 or 2-14 fairly easily. My 41-9n pulls a 2-14 easily and once it gets going,it is suprising the power these little powerhouses realy have.thyat having been said a 2-16 will give it quite a tussle,as I bought one and the man assured me it would work, and would return my money if not.I got my money back, because it would pull it ,but struggled too much.---lha

George:

If your 8N is ballasted with weights and/or liquid ballast and your tires are decent, it should handle a 2x12 plow in most soils and a 2x12 plow in some conditions.

Without ballast and good tires it will struggle with just about any plow.

If you are not familar with plowing, you might be better off with a single bottom as it is easier to get set up to plow properly. You will also need a disc harrow to break up the sod and smooth the fiels after you turn it over with the plow.

I pull a 1x16 behind my 9n with calcium in the tires and it struggles for traction a bit in untilled soil but does just fine in previously turned ground.

If I had to make a decision on one plow to have this would be it,,, call it a all purpose plow-field cultivator are a tiller,,, take you pic,,, it kicks arse...
and yes you will need more than a bottom plow...

This may be the only thing Dunk and I agree on....
