2 PTO shafts.

Hello,

I have a question.

Does anyone know if someone has made a tractor with 2 PTO shafts in the rear end of a tractor ?

I have heard about several tractors with 1 in the rear, and 1 in the side, but how about 2 in the rear ?

IH built a few million of 'em. :>)

Ok, the tractor on the picture, is that a big tractor ?
I live in Norway, and I know a person who saw a tractor more than 20 years ago with 2 PTO shafts, I can not say what size it was, but maybe around 75 hp, maybe a little more.
And we started talking about what tractor it could be.

All IH large frame row crops "could have" the dual PTO installed.

At 75 horse and if it was an IH, it probably would have been a 706, 756, 766, 886 or the like.

Row Crop,,, is that with the 3 wheels only ? The tractor seen here in Norway was a regular 4 wheel tractor, but 2 wheel drive.

Bill

Row crop means that the tread is adjustable for different row spacing. On both ends of the tractor.

Doesn't matter how many tires/wheels it has.

Bill , I have a IH 706 thats about 40 yrs. old and about 75 hp with 2 shafts . One is for 540 rpm and the other for 1000 rpm . I dont think the 560 series that came before the 706 had the 1000 [ not sure ] but about all bigger IH tractors are able to have 2 shafts to date .

Allan is used to thinking only wide front ends. A row crop is a cultivating type of tractor and it could be either a narrow (2 wheels side by side, 3-4" between tires at bottom) or a single front wheel or a wide adjustable front axle that you change the spacing of all 4 wheels to the row width you are wanting to cultivate. And up to 1959 all tractors had only a 540 RPM PTO shaft, in 1960 John Deere (Not sure about other makes) came out with an optional 1,000 RPM PTO shaft to transmit higher HP PTO shaft loads for larger PTO implements

About all the equipment manufactures have made a tractor with daul shafts some of the newer ones have went to putting a reversible shaft in to get both speeds one shaft will be 540 rpm and the other 1000 rpm. most old tractors just had 540 but as implemnts started getting larger they started putting 1000 on them and the tractors.

Deere 1010 could be optioned with two. The 420,430,435 & 440 could also have a engine speed shaft above the regular 540 or 1000rpm shaft.

Besides the millions of IH tractors with he factory dual 540/1000 shafts, dont forget the Mini Moline's that had basically the same 2 shaft 540/1000 pto.
Another is Oliver which had the plug in 1 shaft 540/1000 pto where you could plug another shaft in the top hole and have an engine speed and rotation shaft in addition to your choice of a 540/1000 shaft below.

I have a good story about that Oliver engine speed pto option. I had an old engine driven 3 phase gen set that I picked out of a scrap yard with a bad engine that I wanted to use to power a grain dryer. I knew from the Oliver op manual that the engine speed pto could be fitted requiring only the little casting that the pto shaft plugs into to install. I removed the engine from the gen set and fitted it with a front bearing and pto stub shaft. With the generator coupled to the engine speed pto of the 1900 Oliver, it would run it very economically at only 1200 rpm.
The funny part was when I got to the Oliver dealer to buy the pto adapter casting. When I told the parts guy what I wanted he bristled up and demanded to know why I wanted that thing ???
When I explaned to him that I wanted to use it to run a generator at part throttle 1200 rpm and understood what it was, he calmed down. He said the reason he got upset was that another fellow had bought that exact same setup thinking that it was how you added a 1000 rpm pto to his tractor. It seemed the guy had bought a new forage chopper that needed a first for him 1000 pto shaft . The parts guy said that attaching that forage chopper 1000 rpm shaft to the Oliver engine speed pto which turned it in reverse at 2400 rpm blew the chopper knives right off that new chopper. lots of damage to a new machine.

Both of my Kubota's have 540/1000 single PTO shaft. Darn Japanese can't do things right though so they put the 540 up and the 1000 down, on the tranny they put the high range up and the low range down. I'm alway getting confused on them.

No, I am not thinking about that, just that a friend of mine saw a tractor with 2 PTO shafts in the rear end and we started to wonder what tractor it was, because he didn't know. He saw it some 20-25 years ago in a workshop, and it was so crowded in there that he only saw the rear end of the tractor. And, he said he had never seen any other tractor at all with 2 shafts in the rear end, and I have never one at all with 2 shafts in the rear end... so I was surprised. I have tried to call him today to ask if he could remember what color the tractor had, but I have not got a hold of him. He is prolly out in the fine weather.
