2 six volt batteries

I should know this, but please school me. Why are there 2 six volt batteries hooked together on some Case tractors. Is it series or parallel?? I should have paid more attention to my Dad when he was explaining this to me years ago. Thanks, Bill

If + to + and - to - then to the tractor off each terminal, the intent is to give you longer crank time and more amps.
If wire the other way, 12v mor power as well.

Is the tractor 12 volt or 6 volt? If 6 volt it's to give more cranking amps for starting. If it's 12 volt, they are hooked up in series to end up with 12 volts to the starter.

2-6v batteries were common with diesel tractors back then because 12v batteries didn't have the cranking amps they have today. So 2-6v batteries in series would crank longer than a 12v. I've never seen a tractor from back then use 2-12v hooked parallel. The 20 series deeres and the 1200 case I believe used 2-12v hooked in series for 24v starters, but that system, at least in the deeres was a pain. I've converted all of mine to 2-12v hooked parallel now and it works better.

As a Case 430, two six-Volt batteries were connected in series to provide 12 Volts plus greater Amperes for longer crank time. I use one 12 Volt now but I have to remove the hood to change it out.
