2 speed cylinder

What is the benefit of a 2 speed Cylinder on a JD 6620 combine? I didn"t know this even existed so I was curious as to what the purpose was.

To give a larger range of speeds. The variable belt sheaves only give a range of 600 to 1200. With the two speed you can put it in low and have a low speed range of 150 to 600. Nice to have for corn and soybeans that you don't need the high cylinder speeds for. The only time I put my 6620 in high range is for small grain.

On my JD 4420 I've never gone below 600 for soybeans; granted thats a different combine. Does going to a lower speed on the 6620 really make that much of a difference?

Slower the speed, less damage to the grain. As long as the grain is getting shelled out, keep the speed slow. Speed makes feed.
